Gospel: LK 10:38-42
In Luke 10:38-42, we see a story that speaks deeply about the choices we make in our daily lives. Martha, welcoming Jesus into her home, is busy serving, preparing, and ensuring everything is perfect. Her heart is in the right place, but her focus is on the wrong things. Meanwhile, her sister Mary sits quietly at the feet of Jesus, listening to His words. Martha, frustrated and burdened, asks Jesus to tell Mary to help with the tasks. But Jesus responds, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part.”
This story is a powerful reminder for us today. Often, we find ourselves like Martha—distracted, worried, and anxious, caught up in the busyness of life. We want to do everything, manage everything, and serve in every way. But in doing so, we sometimes miss the most important thing: being present with God.
Mary represents the posture of quiet surrender, of sitting at Jesus' feet and receiving His wisdom, His peace, and His love. Jesus isn’t dismissing Martha’s work, but He is showing us that there’s a balance we need to find. There are times for serving, but there are also times when we need to stop, be still, and listen to God.
So today, ask yourself: Are you too busy, too anxious, too worried about the things of this world? Are you caught up in trying to do everything that you’ve forgotten the one thing that truly matters—being in the presence of God?
Like Mary, choose the better part. Prioritize your relationship with God over the distractions. Everything else will fall into place when you put Him first. The peace and wisdom you gain from His presence will guide you through every task, every responsibility. So, take a moment today to sit at His feet, and let Him refresh your soul.
