In Luke 11:5-13, Jesus tells a parable about a man who persistently knocks on his friend's door at midnight, seeking bread for a guest. Though the friend is reluctant at first, he eventually gives in due to the man's persistence. Jesus then follows this with the well-known words: "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you."
This passage teaches us about the importance of persistence in prayer. Just as the man in the parable didn’t give up knocking, we are encouraged to be persistent in bringing our needs and desires before God. Jesus assures us that our Heavenly Father hears us when we ask, seek, and knock. But more than just persistence, this passage highlights the goodness of God. Jesus compares earthly fathers—who, despite their flaws, know how to give good gifts to their children—to our perfect Heavenly Father, who gives us far greater gifts, especially the gift of the Holy Spirit.
This reminds us that when we pray, we are not merely requesting things; we are seeking a deeper relationship with God, trusting in His goodness and provision. Even when we don’t immediately receive what we ask for, we can trust that God, in His wisdom, knows what is best for us.
So, let us approach God with the confidence of a child, knowing that He is a loving Father who hears our prayers and responds in ways that are for our ultimate good. Persistence in prayer strengthens our faith and deepens our trust in His loving care. Amen.
